What we fix

  • Cracked sewer under a driveway you would rather not dig up
  • Root damaged joints in an old clay line
  • Sections that have dropped and now hold water
  • Lines running under a slab or an established garden
  • Pipe that keeps blocking in the same spot
What is going on

Why this happens

When a sewer pipe cracks, the old answer was to dig it up. That means a trench across the lawn, or through a driveway, or under a deck that took a fortnight to build. The repair is the cheap part. Putting the yard back is not.

Relining does the same job from the inside. A resin liner goes in through an existing access point, gets inflated against the old pipe wall, and cures into a new pipe inside the old one. No trench, no jackhammer, no landscaping bill.

It suits the two most common failures we see. Root intrusion, where roots have prised joints apart in older earthenware, and cracked or fractured sections in ground that has moved. Both are very common in older Gold Coast and Brisbane suburbs.

Even a collapsed or deformed section can often be cut back from the inside with a robotic cutter to reopen the bore, then lined. A run with no fall left in it is the one that still needs replacing. The camera tells us which you have before you commit to anything.

Pipe Relining
How we do it

What actually happens on the job

1

Camera the line first

Nothing gets quoted off a guess. The camera shows exactly where the damage is, how long it runs, and whether the pipe is a candidate for lining at all.

2

Clean it out

The old pipe gets jetted and cut clean so the liner bonds properly. Roots, scale and build-up all come out first.

3

Install the liner

Resin liner goes in through the existing access, inflates against the pipe wall and cures in place. Most jobs are done in a day.

4

Camera it again

Second inspection confirms the new pipe is smooth end to end with no wrinkles or gaps. You see the footage, not just our word for it.

Straight about money

What it costs

Relining is priced by the metre and by how difficult the access is, so it gets quoted after the camera inspection rather than over the phone.

It is usually dearer than a straight dig-and-replace on an open lawn, and considerably cheaper once a driveway, a pool surround or established landscaping is in the way. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.

$0 call-out and free quotes. The camera inspection tells us both what we are dealing with.

Dig it up or reline it? How the decision actually gets made

Relining is not always the answer, and anyone who says it is has not looked at the pipe. Here is what decides it.

  1. 1
    How much pipe is left

A collapsed or deformed section can often be cut back from the inside with a robotic cutter to reopen the bore, and then lined. The camera tells us whether yours can be.

  2. 2
What is on top of it

This is usually the real question. A trench through lawn is cheap. A trench through a stamped concrete driveway, a pool surround or established landscaping costs more than the plumbing does.

  3. 3
    Whether you can get access

Relining goes in through an existing access point. If there is a usable one, no digging. If there is not, we may need to open one small spot.

  4. 4
    How many joints and bends

Long straight runs are ideal. A lot of sharp bends can make a liner impractical, and we will say so rather than trying it and failing.

  5. 5
    What the camera shows

Every one of the above is a guess until the line has been looked at. That is why the camera goes down first, every time, before anyone quotes.

The honest version: relining suits most root damage and cracked joints in otherwise sound pipe, and it is at its best where digging would wreck something expensive. A collapsed section can often be cut back from the inside and lined too, and the camera tells us whether yours can be.

Worth knowing before you ring

Pipe Relining, in plain terms

What relining actually is

A liner soaked in resin goes into the old pipe soft, gets inflated so it presses against the inside wall, and cures hard. What you end up with is a new pipe formed inside the old one, joined at nothing.

Because there are no joints in it, the thing roots were getting through is gone. That is the point of it, not just avoiding the digging.

When it beats digging

Anywhere the ground above the pipe is worth more than the pipe. Under a driveway, a slab, a paved courtyard, an established garden, or a line that runs beneath the house.

For a short break in reachable ground, digging is usually cheaper and we will say so. The honest answer is not always the bigger invoice.

What we look at first

The camera decides everything. It shows whether the pipe is cracked, root damaged or has dropped, and whether there is enough of it left to line.

A collapsed section can often be cut back from the inside with a robotic cutter to reopen the bore, and then lined. You get told what yours needs before you spend anything, not after.

Here to help

Not sure if it is a pipe relining job?

That is fine. Most people ring us with symptoms, not answers. We will help you work out what needs doing and what can wait.

A quick call helps more than perfect wording

You do not need to know whether to call it pipe relining or something else. Tell us what you can see, what has changed, and whether the problem is getting worse. From there we can send the right gear instead of making you diagnose it.

We slow down when the choice matters

Some pipe relining work has more than one sensible fix. If a smaller repair will get you through, we will say so. If it is likely to fail again soon, we will say that too, then let you choose what suits the house and the budget.

Small details help us arrive prepared

For pipe relining, photos can save time: the label, the leak, the access point, or the place where water is showing. We still confirm it on site, but the extra context helps us bring what the job is likely to need.

From the job

Watch: how a pipe gets relined without digging

The liner goes in soft, inflates against the inside of the old pipe and cures hard. No trench, no reinstating the driveway.

  • The liner goes in through an existing access point

Matt came to our home was a delight to work with. Excellent workmanship and very courteous. Went above and beyond to assist. He provided us with quotes for various plumbing items, he quickly provided a detailed quote, explained options. He was excellent at commencing work in one area, and double checked water pressure in our area, hot water system and the plumbing items I had purchased. A great tradesman. Thoroughly recommend. Thankyou Matt.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! Both Blake & Lachlan were great to deal with & Lachlan did a great job - definitely better than the original installation, which looked a bit dodgy! Happy to recommend.

This is the type of plumbing service that everybody wants. They quote before they do the job. They turn up when they say they will. And they're very good at what they do. Good Service - Fair Price - not something you normally say about Plumbers these days. Keep up the great work Blake, Lachie and Raif.

Absolutely amazing service from the moment I got in touch with them, and in particular Blake. I explained to him my issue and he took the time and effort (completely unprompted) in providing steps of how he would tackle the problem. When it came time to actually have the issue physically looked at, Lachie gave me a call and let me know how far away he was; he arrived promptly and on-time, and was able to very quickly diagnose and provide a solution. I was quoted on the spot and not pressured whatsoever to have more things looked at than I needed to, which I very much appreciated. While I've got my fingers crossed to not have any further short-term issues with my property's plumbing, I'd wholeheartedly recommend these guys and gals to anyone willing to listen. I'm sure there are many other great plumbing businesses around the Gold Coast, but for my money I'd much rather support a local family-owned business providing a very honest and transparent service, who also aren't looking to bleed your wallet dry.

Very happy with the service from Genies Plumbing. We had a leaking kitchen tap and Blake was out in a couple of hours. He sourced a new one, came back later in the day and fitted it. He advised his arrival times very efficiently and was friendly and polite. Would certainly recommend him and call on him again when necessary.

Blake and Lachlan assisted us with a very complex realignment. They were brilliant. They took the time to explain everything, kept me updated with any issues that arose, kept on time and impressively on budget. They could not have worked harder to resolve our issues. I was so worried that we would need to crack our slab and have to retile the majority of our house. These boys made a plan and stuck to it. Fabulous outcome!!

From the moment we made the call with our list of to do's - to the moment the boys came and left after the job completion- the entire help was incredible, and the workmanship was thorough and detailed and reasonable". This workmanship advise is Beyond MOST service and help we have experienced over the last few years. Thank you boys! This type of experience is often not the most favourite one for many people, but in this case, what a great time to get everything sorted with an ease of mind and honesty personified. 2 showers 1 bath 1 laundry 1 bathroom sink Thanks again team - we'll see you again. You'll be our first point of call . A++++

I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed. He kept us informed every step of the way, and was incredibly responsive and professional, and a genuinely nice person. He's also helping put together a storm water system to help manage the water drainage away from the house during storms. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Blake for any plumbing job, big or small.

Had some plumbing work done by Blake from Genies Plumbing — removal of an old water meter and repair/replacement of some leaking pipework. Communication was great from start to finish, he was prompt, friendly, well priced, and made sure everything was cleaned up afterwards. Really happy with the work. Would definitely recommend and use again.

Questions we get asked

How long does a relined pipe last?

The liner is designed for a fifty year service life. It is a new pipe inside the old one, and it has no joints for roots to get back into.

Do you need to dig at all?

Usually not. We work through an existing inspection opening. Occasionally one small access pit is needed, which is still a world away from a trench.

Will roots come back?

Not through a lined section. The old joints are what let them in, and the liner seals straight over them.

Can every pipe be relined?

Most can. A collapsed or deformed section can often be cut back from the inside and lined. A run with no fall is the one that has to be replaced. The camera tells us before you have spent anything.

How long does it take?

Most domestic jobs are done in a day, including the inspections either side.

Is pipe relining worth it?

It depends on what is above the pipe. On an open lawn a dig and replace is often cheaper and just as good. Once the run goes under a driveway, a pool surround or established landscaping, relining is usually the cheaper answer by the time you count putting the yard back, and it is finished in a day rather than a fortnight. The camera tells us which situation you are in before you commit to anything.

How much does pipe relining cost per metre?

We do not publish a per metre rate, because the metres are only half of it. The price moves on how long the damaged run is, how many access points there are and whether one has to be dug, how many bends and junctions the liner has to pass, and the diameter of the pipe. A short run through an existing opening and a long run under a driveway are very different jobs. The camera goes down first and the quote comes off what it finds, with no call-out fee either way.
