This is the planned version of the job rather than the emergency one. Nothing is flooding. The pipe has been telling you it is at the end for a while, through a drain that keeps blocking at the same point, pressure that has quietly dropped off, or a camera run that showed the line is cracked rather than clogged.
Age is normally behind it. Galvanised supply corrodes from the inside, so the bore closes up long before it ever leaks and the first symptom is poor pressure rather than water. Early copper thins at the bends. Clay and earthenware sewer does not corrode at all, but it moves, and joints that have opened let roots in and ground water out.
Ground movement finishes the job. Reactive clay swells and shrinks with the seasons while rigid pipe stays rigid, so joints pull apart. Fill that is still settling under a newer house does the same thing faster.
The decision worth getting right is repair, reline or replace. A single cracked section in reachable ground is a repair. A long run under a driveway or a slab is usually a reline, because the digging costs more than the pipe. A supply line that has closed up along its whole length has to be replaced, because there is nothing left in it to save.
Material and age decide the options. Galvanised, copper, PVC, clay and earthenware all fail differently and all get treated differently.
On a drain that means the camera and a locator, so the damage is marked on the surface before anything is opened up.
You will be told when relining is the cheaper answer, even though digging is the bigger number on the invoice.

Reachable ground is the cheapest case. Under a driveway, a slab or an established garden costs more, and the reason is the access rather than the pipe.

These are three different jobs and the wrong one costs you twice. A single cracked section in reachable ground is a repair. A long run under a driveway or a slab is usually a reline, because the digging costs more than the pipe.
A supply line that has corroded shut along its whole length has to be replaced. There is nothing left in it worth saving, and patching one end just moves the problem along.
Galvanised is dull grey steel and a magnet sticks to it. Copper is copper coloured and a magnet does not. PVC is the white or cream plastic. On the sewer side, clay and earthenware are the reddish brown ones with a joint every metre or so.
It matters because they fail differently. Galvanised closes up from the inside and kills your pressure. Copper thins at the bends. Clay does not corrode at all, it just moves and opens its joints.
Where we do dig, the point is to open the ground over the fault and nowhere else. That means locating it properly first with a camera and a locator, and marking it on the surface before a shovel comes out.
It costs an hour at the start and saves a trench across the yard. The surface goes back the way we found it.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! Absolutely amazing service from the moment I got in touch with them, and in particular Blake. I explained to him my issue and he took the time and effort (completely unprompted) in providing steps of how he would tackle the problem. Very happy with the service from Genies Plumbing. We had a leaking kitchen tap and Blake was out in a couple of hours. He sourced a new one, came back later in the day and fitted it. I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed. Relining puts a new pipe inside the old one without digging it up. Repair and replacement means opening the ground and laying new pipe. Relining suits long runs under hard surfaces, digging suits short reachable faults.
